What is the Weekly Varsity Theatre Update?

It's a message sent to our friends who wish to be the first to receive news of films and events at the Varsity Theatre. The e-mail is usually sent out Wednesdays or Thursdays every week and is available in Plain Text or HTML.

How do I sign up?

We have a sign-up sheet in the theatre lobby (please write legibly! Often we cannot add addresses to our list simply due to illegible handwriting) or better yet, you can sign up via our web site (see link below).

I've joined your e-mail list but am not receiving the weekly Varsity Theatre messages

There could be a number of different explanations for this:

1. If you signed up in person at the theatre, your e-mail address may not have been added to our list if we could not read it;

2. Your internet service provider ("ISP") is blocking our messages; if you are using an e-mail address at work, businesses and government often have even higher levels of filtering on their systems and our e-mails are being blocked

3. Our e-mails are being dropped into your "junk mail" box (please check it)

4. You have subscribed to receive HTML messages but your ISP will allow only Plain Text messages

How can these problems be remedied?

If you use Hotmail, be sure to click "Show Content" on the message and put our address on your "Safe List". The same can be said for most e-mail programs.

You can add the domain, "m1e.net" to your Safe List (or "White List") on your e-mail settings/account preferences or at the ISP level if necessary. Our e-mails are sent out by the "m1e.net" server; not the "mrvarsity" address you see on our messages;

You could change your e-mail list preferences from HTML to Plain Text and see if the latter type can be received if HTML has not been working for you;

You can try signing up with a different e-mail address, preferably a personal address rather than your employer

What's the difference between HTML messages and Plain Text?

This web page is coded in HTML. The HTML versions of our weekly updates look like web pages, with photos or graphics; Plain Text is simply that.

Why can't I forward the HTML messages to friends? They receive them all garbled up.

The mass mailing service we use does not have a special feature that allows the forwarding of HTML messages. Other services' messages may have a link "Forward to a Friend" but ours do not. The reason for this is to lessen the chances of spam and unwanted e-mails being sent to our subscribers and their friends. There of course is no problem at all forwarding plain text messages.

The subscriber could make PDF's of our HTML messages and forward those to friends, among other options. This is more simple to do on a Mac, and we have found that forwarding our HTML messages amongst Mac users, and using Apple Mail, has not posed a problem. Another option is to simply tell your friends to join our list directly.

I've joined your list by using the link on the Varsity web site. I received a confirmation e-mail in return. What do I do now?

Just reply to the e-mail. When you do, your address will be entered into the system. You must reply to that e-mail, confirming that you want to be on the list, otherwise you will not be added to our system.

Addresses that are given to us in person at the theatre are entered into the system by the webmaster, and these subscribers are not sent a confirmation e-mail.

How do I unsubscribe from your list, change my e-mail address or other settings?

At the bottom of every Varsity Theatre e-mail, you'll see a link called "Unsubscribe/Change Profile". You'll be taken to a page (see below) where you can:

Change your e-mail address

Select HTML or Plain Text for your messages

Unsubscribe and remove your address from our mailing list

to the Varsity Theatre webmaster with your questions about the e-mail list or web site, only
